VR

MRI Project

Project: Virtual Reality experience of an MRI scan that can be shown to young hospital patients.

Idea: Shows the procedure so the patients are aware and informed about the whole MRI process, and are less anxious beforehand.  The patient is taken through the procedure by the animated Radiographer and voiceover narrative. Later on in the project, the sea-life emerge and swim around the patient, creating a calming and relaxing experience.

Motivation: It is something I feel strongly about because growing up as a young patient, I had many procedures and never really knew and understood well enough what was going to happen, apart from the short explanation by the Doctors. Therefore, my project will help to allay patients concerns.

VR Morgan Stanley Garden

-Project: Virtual Reality Garden based on the Morgan Stanley Garden at G.O.S.H. Primarily for patients in Isolation, although can be watched by anyone

-Idea: The patient is sitting in the Morgan Stanley Garden, which comes alive in VR. For the duration of the experience, animals deliver reassuring and thoughtful letters that have been written by former patients. Designed for patients on the ward, who do not have the opportunity to leave their room.

Motivation: By allowing the patients in Isolation to experience the Morgan Stanley Garden whilst wearing the Virtual Reality headset, they are able to sit in a peaceful and relaxing environment that allows them to escape the enclosed room they are living in for a while, and be “transported” to this new place (The Garden). Having been a patient on isolated wards, I have experienced not being able to go outside of the hospital room and the Hospital itself. Therefore, bringing the Garden to them through virtual reality would surpass the issue of being in isolation, albeit for short while.
